USA AT GLANCE:

The United States of America (the U.S.A. or USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S. or US) or America, is a transcontinental country primarily located in North America. It consists of 50 states, a federal district, five major unincorporated territories, 326 Indian reservations, and nine minor outlying islands.[i] It is the third-largest country in both land and total area.[c] The United States shares land borders with Canada to the north and with Mexico to the south as well as maritime borders with the Bahamas, Cuba, and Russia, among others.[j] With more than 331 million people,[d] it is the third most populous country in the world. The national capital is Washington, D.C., and the most populous city and centre are New York City.

Science and technology
The United States has been a leader in technological innovation since the late 19th century and scientific research since the mid-20th century. Methods for producing interchangeable parts were developed by the U.S. War Department by the Federal Armoires during the first half of the 19th century. This technology, along with the establishment of a machine tool industry, enabled the U.S. to have large-scale manufacturing of sewing machines, bicycles, and other items in the late 19th century and became known as the American system of manufacturing. Factory electrification in the early 20th century and the introduction of the assembly line and other labour-saving techniques created the system of mass production. In the 21st century, approximately two-thirds of research and development funding comes from the private sector. In 2020, the United States was the country with the second-highest number of published scientific papers and second most patents granted.

USA Education System:

One of the most attractive features of the U.S. higher education system is the flexibility it provides through the number and diversity of institution types it encompasses.
This diversity offers students options to specialize in a variety of academic disciplines and even gain employment training.
More than 4,000 accredited institutions make up U.S. higher education in the United States. Unlike many countries, U.S. higher education institutions are not centrally organized or managed but are accredited on a national or regional level by independent accrediting bodies.
A variety of institution types offer higher-education degrees. Liberal arts institutions, for example, offer courses in the arts, humanities, languages, and social and physical sciences. The majority of liberal arts institutions are private. Private colleges and universities are funded by a combination of endowments, gifts from alumni, research grants, and tuition fees. Private colleges and universities are usually smaller than public institutions and can have a religious affiliation.

ASSOCIATE DEGREE
Students pursue an associate degree in either academic or professional subjects in terminal career or technical programs. Unlike certificate and diploma programs, the associate degree is recognized as a higher education degree and credits earned during the program may be transferred to a bachelor’s degree program under certain conditions. The most common types of associate degrees earned in academic programs are the Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degrees. Completion of these programs generally requires at least 2 years of full-time academic studies.

BACHELOR’S DEGREE
A bachelor’s degree is the most common in U.S. higher education and leads to advanced study possibilities. Obtaining a bachelor’s degree usually requires 4 years of full-time academic studies. However, many degrees can take longer to complete, including those in engineering, architecture, and other fields. Most bachelor’s degrees are titled Bachelor of Arts (BA or AB) or Bachelor of Science (BS or SB), but there are many other bachelor’s degree titles in use.

FIRST-PROFESSIONAL DEGREE
First-professional degree is a category of qualifications in professional subject areas that require students to have previously completed specified undergraduate coursework and/or a degree before enrolling. It is considered to be a graduate-level program in the U.S. system, and first-professional degree holders may undertake graduate study in professional fields following the award of the degree. Some of these degrees use the term “doctor” in the title, but do not contain an independent research component or require defending a dissertation. A first-professional degree requires a total of at least 6 academic years of college work to complete the program, including prior required college work and the length of the professional program itself.

MASTER’S DEGREE
A master’s degree is the first graduate-level qualification in the U.S. higher education system and may lead to PhD studies. Master’s degrees usually take two years to complete, but the period may vary depending on the field of study and the structure of the program. Popular fields of study for master’s programs include business, education, health and medicine, public administration, and social services. The most common master’s degrees are Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Science (MS). However, there are many different degree titles, especially in the professional fields.

DOCTORATE/PHD DEGREE
A doctorate or PhD degree is considered to be the highest academic qualification in the U.S. education system. The structure of the doctorate programs is more formal and complex than previous degrees and requires complete and independent research upon completion. Furthermore, students admitted to doctoral programs must participate in doctoral seminars or colloquia and pass written comprehensive examinations that cover their chosen research specialization. A student may spend four to six years earning his or her doctorate.

Accreditation and Authorities:

The U.S. Department of Education does not accredit educational institutions and/or programs. However, the Department provides oversight over the postsecondary accreditation system through its review of all federally-recognized accrediting agencies. The Department holds accrediting agencies accountable by ensuring that they enforce their accreditation standards effectively. Also, as a part of the Department’s oversight roles, the Secretary of Education is required by law to publish a list of nationally recognized accrediting agencies that the Secretary determines to be reliable authorities as to the quality of education or training provided by the institutions of higher education and the higher education programs they accredit. The Secretary of Education also recognizes State agencies for the approval of public postsecondary vocational education and nurse education.

Please note, that the Secretary’s recognition of accrediting agencies is limited by statute to accreditation activities within the United States. Although many recognized agencies carry out accrediting activities outside the United States, these actions are not within the legal authority of the Department of Education to recognize, are not reviewed by the Department, and the Department does not exercise any oversight over them. (Consequently, institutions and programs outside the United States that are accredited by recognized agencies are not included in this database.)

A copy of your bank account is expected from most schools, although some may allow other documentation to show financial eligibility. Generally, American universities offer two types of funding: financial aid, which is need-based, and scholarships which award academic excellence.

Scholarships in the USA:

There are many resources available to search for scholarships, and nowadays, if you have the time and available resources, you can find most of them online. As per eligibility, it depends entirely on the scholarship. Besides, the majority of universities offer some kind of financial aid for their international students.
